Your living room should be the most used room in your house. Whether you use it for socializing, watching the television or eating dinner, it is regarded as the hub of activity. Because of the variety of activities that can take place in the living room, you will need furniture to suit every occasion, along with providing enough storage for all of your DVD’s, CD’s, games or anything else that you need to hand.
There is no rules to say what furniture you have to have in your living room, but most commonly, sofas, chairs, bookcases, sideboards, TV units and coffee tables are found.
Choosing furniture for your living room
The first thing to consider is what you want to use your living room for, as different uses will require different levels of planning. If you plan to use your living room for mainly watching TV, you will need a TV cabinet or stand not only for your TV, but also for your DVD player, Sky Box and games console.
If on the other hand you wish to make your living room a TV free zone, have a look at a bookcase and a nest of tables. A nest of tables is perfect for many occasions, whether it be to place a cup of tea, or write a letter. They can then be compactly stored away.
Another useful addition to a living room is a coffee table. Coffee tables come in a variety of sizes, from small tables with shelves, to large coffee tables with hidden storage.
Planning your living room
There a number of ways that you could look at when planning the new layout of your living room. The best, and probably easiest is to draw a scale plan so that you can work out how much space you have between each piece of furniture. There is nothing worse than not planning, and then realizing that you don’t have room to open the cupboard door once your new dresser is place…Trust me, I am speaking from experience!
It is also important to think about the distance that your seating is away from the TV. If you own a 25-27in screen, you should place the TV cabinet 2.4m away from the seating. For a 32in screen it should be 3m away and for over 36in your TV stand should be at least 3m away from your seating area.
